Quantum dots (QDs) are nanoscale semiconductor crystals that absorb light and re-emit specific wavelengths with high efficiency. By controlling their composition and size, they can be engineered to produce targeted passive photobiomodulation (PBM) light. QDs can be excited by ambient artificial indoor lighting or natural sunlight and, when encapsulated within biocompatible materials, are designed to enhance stability, minimize leaching, and reduce direct exposure. An additional protective overcoat may be applied to further minimize leaching and enhance safety. This technology can be incorporated into spectacle lenses, contact lenses, and other ophthalmic optics to provide continuous passive PBM during everyday light exposure.
